Former India captain and legendary batsman Rahul Dravid is reported to take the role of the interim coach of Team India on the tour of Sri Lanka.

The Men In Blue will play three ODIs and three T20Is in Sri Lanka from July 13 to 27. But the squad will miss plenty of first-choice players as they would be on the Test tour of the UK, which comprises the World Test Championship final against New Zealand followed by a 5-Test series versus England. The quarantine protocols render the Indian players in the UK at the time unavailable for the Sri Lanka tour.

Since the coaching staff headed by Ravi Shastri, along with bowling coach Bharat Arun and batting coach Vikram Rathour, will also be in the UK, the BCCI will be sending Rahul Dravid, the Head of the National Cricket Academy, to Sri Lanka as a coach.

This is will be Rahul Dravid’s second stint in a coaching position with the senior men’s team – he traveled with the side as a batting consultant on the tour of England in 2014.

“The Team India coaching staff will be in the UK and it is best that the young team is guided by Dravid as he has already worked with almost all of the India ‘A’ boys. The comfort the youngsters share with him will be an added advantage,” a BCCI official in the know of developments told ANI.

Rahul Dravid took over as India A and U-19 coach in 2015; he was reappointed for 2 years in 2017. Under his coaching, India made it to the final of the 2016 U-19 World Cup, and in 2018, the Prithvi Shaw-led side clinched the title.

With most of the first-choice players in England, the Sri Lanka series will give the fringe players a chance to put forward their case – or make it stronger for some – for a place in the T20 World Cup squad. It also remains to be seen, who would be appointed as the captain – Shikhar Dhawan is considered as the front-runner for the job.
