On Friday, former India head coach Ravi Shastri said that the Ranji Trophy is the backbone of Indian cricket and if the marquee domestic competition is ignored — Indian cricket would become “spineless”.

Ranji Trophy, which was set to begin on January 13 this year, was postponed indefinitely on January 4 due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the country. Also, the tournament was not held last season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, just an hour after Shastri’s statement, confirmed that the upcoming season of the Ranji Trophy will be conducted in two phases.

“The Board has decided to conduct the Ranji Trophy this season in two phases. In the first phase, we plan to complete all matches of the league stage while the knockouts will be held in June,” Shah said in a statement.

“Ranji Trophy is our most prestigious domestic competition, which has been providing Indian Cricket with an enviable talent pool every year. It is absolutely important that we take all necessary steps to safeguard the interest of this premier event,” he added.

The first phase of the domestic tournament is expected to commence in the second week of February and the second phase of the tournament will be played in June.

Earlier, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal, after a meeting of the Board on Thursday, had said that the board plans to hold the tournament in two phases. The main reason behind this move by the BCCI is reportedly the schedule of the Indian Premier League, which is expected to be played from March 27.
