South African batter Rassie van der Dussen has shockingly announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday, April 2. Rassie van der Dussen made this tough call just hours after he was dropped from Cricket South Africa's central contract list for the 2026–27 season.

Van der Dussen, along with senior star David Miller, was one of the biggest names missing from the new contract list shared by the CSA earlier this week.

This omission was a clear message from the CSA, and the batter didn’t take much time before making a call to say goodbye to international cricket. Notably, he played 57 T20Is, 71 ODIs and 18 Tests for South Africa and has around 5000 international runs to his name.

Rassie van der Dussen calls playing for South Africa his greatest honour

Announcing his retirement from the highest level, Van der Dussen said that he is proud and thankful for getting the chance to play for South Africa. He explained that wearing the national jersey needed a lot of hard work and sacrifices, but it was the biggest honor of his life.

Rassie van der Dussen said in his official statement shared on his social media handles, "It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket. To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country has been the greatest honor of my life. This journey has been paved with years of sacrifice, but the privilege of representing South Africa was worth every moment.”

Rassie thanks Lions, CSA, mentors and wife

The right-handed batter spoke about growing up with his three brothers, where the “Proteas badge” meant “something sacred” to their family. He felt proud to be able to fulfill his responsibility to take their family to the international level, saying cricket gave him everything.

Van der Dussen thanked the Lions franchise and former CEOs, Jono Leaf-Wright and Greg Fredericks, for supporting his career at an early stage. He also thanked CSA, all the coaches, and his long-time friend and manager for giving him the platform to wear the Proteas jersey.

Rassie said his wife has supported him through all the highs and lows of his journey. He shared how special it felt to hear fans call out his name. He mentioned, “There is no feeling quite like hearing 'MaThousand' called out in the streets, or the spine-tingling experience of walking out to bat at a packed Wanderers Stadium to the deafening roar of Fokofpolisiekar's Antibiotika. Those moments of connection are difficult to describe, and those emotions will stay with me forever.”

My dream came true, yours can too: Rassie’s message to young cricketers

He also encouraged young players to dream big and work hard. Rassie further noted, “My advice to young players has always been, and will remain, to dream big and give absolutely everything you have to achieve your dreams. I have never viewed myself as more special or naturally talented than the next person. The simple fact that I have been able to live out my ultimate dream should serve as proof that you can too—no matter what your dream might be.”

However, Van der Dussen retired from international cricket, but he will continue playing for the Lions and help young South African cricketers grow. He signed off by saying, “While my time in a Proteas shirt has come to an end, my journey is not over. I will continue to play for my beloved Lions, and I am committed to giving back to this beautiful game by teaching and mentoring the next generation of South African cricketers.”
