Amid the euphoria of India reaching the ICC World Test Championship’s final, coach Ravi Shastri did not forget to iterate Virat Kohli’s importance in building a team that has become world-beaters. India confirmed their spot in the ICC World Test Championship’s final against New Zealand in June by beating England on Saturday. Ravi Shastri credited Kohli for building a team and rapport for the past six years that has reaped rich dividends.

While Virat Kohli had not fired as consistently with the bat as expected in Tests against England, the passion and fire were there in him to win. Kohli departed for an eight-ball duck in the fourth Test and managed only 172 runs with two fifties at 28.67, prolonging his span without an international hundred since November 2019. But the 32-year old kept enjoying success as captain as he backed the youngsters relentlessly.

Ravi Shastri conceded that plenty of people forget the role that Virat Kohli plays as he introduced the practices of professionalism, work ethics, trust, and fitness instead of excuses. The 58-year old felt proud of the team spirit and the camaraderie that they share and revealed that it was unlike he had ever seen.

“A lot of people forget the role Virat Kohli plays. He wanted professionalism, work ethics, trust, fitness, no excuses. All this has worked for the team. I haven’t ever seen such team spirit and camaraderie. As a coach, I’m extremely proud of the boys,” Shastri said in a press conference on Sunday.

Ravi Shastri stated that it’s an incredible achievement to reach the ICC World Test Championship’s final after going through a lot. He claimed that Virat Kohli’s men take pride in winning and do not mind losing as long as they take the opposition to their limits.

“I cannot say how proud of I am of my Indian cricket team. To qualify for the ICC World Test Championship after everything they went through is incredible. This team takes pride in winning. This team doesn’t mind losing as long as it throws its punches,” he added.
