Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was ecstatic for Afghanistan after they defeated England in their Champions Trophy 2025 clash in Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Ravi Shastri also claimed that England were unprepared for this tournament.

Afghanistan created history by defeating England by 8 runs in Lahore. It was a magnificent performance from Hashmatullah Shahidi and his boys who turned the tables on a much-fancied England side in a do-or-die game.

Ravi Shastri ecstatic after Afghanistan beats England

After Afghanistan completed the win over England, Ravi Shastri congratulated them for a brilliant performance. He also warned England to prepare themselves well before coming to the subcontinent, otherwise, they won't be known as a good traveling team.

"Afghanistan. You guys rock. Kammaaal Kaardi. For England. Take playing in the Subcontinent seriously with no excuses. Only then you will be recognised as a Team that can TRAVEL," Ravi Shastri posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Afghanistan and England produced the most interesting game of the tournament so far on February 26 (Wednesday). The fact that this was a must-win game for both teams made it even better for the spectators.

Both teams fought hard to be in contention for the semi-finals. However, it was Afghanistan who had the last laugh, but not by much. The match went down to the wire and the Afghan boys soaked in the pressure well in the end.

Ibrahim Zadran plays innings of a lifetime

Afghanistan batted first after winning the toss but the decision seemed to go wrong when they lost three quick wickets within the first ten overs. Jofra Archer took all three wickets as Afghanistan were on the back foot.

However, Ibrahim Zadran had other ideas and he formed a fine partnership with his captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Both of them collected 103 runs together but Shahidi was dismissed for 40 off 67 balls.

Azmatullah Omarzai smashed a quickfire 41 off just 31 balls with 1 four and 3 sixes to take the momentum forward. Allrounder Mohammad Nabi also played a blinder with 40 off just 24 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes.

However, it was Ibrahim Zadran who did the most damage with a scintillating knock of 177 off just 146 balls. Zadran held the innings together despite wickets falling at the other end. He struck 12 fours and 6 sixes, helping Afghanistan reach a fine score of 325-7 in 50 overs.

Afghanistan survive Joe Root threat

In reply, England started poorly losing the first two wickets quickly. They kept on losing wickets but Joe Root held the innings together with a fine knock.

The batters Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Jos Buttler all got starts but were unable to convert them into big ones. It hurt England as they were always behind in the run-chase.

Jamie Overton played a blinder down the order but that wasn't enough. Root played a magnificent knock of 120 off 111 balls but England were all out for 317 in the final over of the match.

Afghanistan now needs to beat Australia in their next match to qualify for the semi-finals while England have been knocked out.
