Former Team India head coach and 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder, Ravi Shastri, has hinted at the possibility of coaching an Indian Premier League (IPL) side in the future. However, Shastri made it clear that he may not get into coaching in the IPL anytime soon, but he is open to the job.

The former Indian skipper, who is currently commentating on the ongoing IPL 2024, wants to nurture young talents rather than solely focus on monetary gains by coaching an IPL team in the future. Shastri also praised the rich talent pool in India, saying it motivated him to mentor budding cricketers. He wants to help the youngsters’ growth and success.

Shastri said that the prospects of working with young Indian players always excite him, but he wanted a break from the intense environment of the dressing room after resigning as India’s head coach in 2021, and that’s why he has not yet taken on any coaching roles.

Ravi Shastri eyes future IPL coaching role

Ravi Shastri said on being asked by R Ashwin on his YouTube chat show if he wanted to coach an IPL side after 2021: “Not really. Not after doing India for 7 years. You never know what can come up in the future and how involved you are going to get. You know, there is no doubting the experience you have and what you can bring to the table."

The commentator added, “But after 7 years with the Indian team, especially those times — you were there — the toughest time that game has seen since the World War II — during Covid, quarantine and the bubbles, you just wanted a break from the dugout, the dressing room and everything. The broadcasting and the mic gave me the freedom to express myself again. And have some fun.”

Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri mentioned that he wouldn't rule out the possibility of coaching young cricketers. The former India coach stressed that coaching youngsters would always be on his mind, having been deeply involved in the game and having a desire to contribute to nurturing young talent.

He also reiterated that his coaching role will not be just about the monetary aspect but also about making a meaningful contribution to Indian cricket while highlighting the importance of passing on his knowledge to the next generation.

The former Indian skipper also made it clear that he will only take up the job to mentor and develop young players, rather than work with the established superstars of the game. He further expressed his enjoyment of identifying and nurturing talent, guiding them to reach their full potential and new heights.

Shastri revealed that his satisfaction would be in helping players overcome challenges such as language barriers and cultural differences, as his goal would be to instill a fearless and ruthless mindset in young cricketers, which he considers his specialty.

At the end, the former Indian all-rounder stressed that coaching youngsters would always be something he's interested in and passionate about, so he would love to return to coaching in the future.
