The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has reportedly called for an emergency meeting following a major shake-up in its leadership. President Raghuram Bhatt called the meeting after Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer E. S. Jairam submitted their resignations from their respective roles.
A tragic stampede occurred at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations. Eleven people died and many others were injured when an overwhelming crowd gathered inside and outside the venue. An FIR has been registered against KSCA officials.
Karnataka High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Stadium Stampede Incident
The Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognizance of the stampede incident on Thursday after being briefed by Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty. The court instructed the state government to submit a status report by June 10, when the case will next be heard.
Justice S. R. Krishna Kumar, presiding over a single-judge bench, granted interim protection from arrest to senior KSCA officials, provided they fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.
Although the Karnataka High Court granted temporary relief to KSCA officials, public and internal pressure grew for the association’s leadership to resign on moral grounds. In their submission to the court, KSCA members argued that the venue had been rented out to the franchise.
KSCA Secretary, Treasurer Resign After 11 Die in RCB Parade
A Shankar and A E Jairam stepped down from their roles as secretary and treasurer, respectively, issuing a joint statement on Saturday confirming their resignations. Both are reputed auditors from Bengaluru and have served the association for three years.
Their resignations came amid public outrage and mounting demands for accountability following a deadly stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. The incident occurred during RCB's IPL victory celebrations and is currently under official investigation.
Shankar and Jairam said they submitted their resignations to KSCA President Raghuram Bhat on Thursday night and accepted moral responsibility for the tragedy. Their departures have triggered urgent internal discussions within the association.
While a celebratory event at the Vidhan Soudha proceeded without incident, chaos erupted outside the stadium where a large crowd had gathered after RCB’s now-deleted social media post promised free entry on a first-come, first-served basis.
