The Bengaluru police have revealed that the state government ignored its warning, leading to the chaos and a deadly stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory celebration.

There was confusion regarding the victory celebration. While RCB announced that a victory parade would take place from the Vidhana Soudha to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the traffic police denied them permission due to heavy traffic congestion. However, around 3.15 PM IST, the franchise once again announced that there would be a parade from 5 PM.

With the franchise announcing the parade, thousands started gathering on the roads to celebrate RCB's historic IPL triumph. According to the police, more than 50,000 people had gathered within a 1-kilometre radius by 3 PM.

The number was only rising with each passing minute, and it eventually led to the stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. 11 people lost their lives while more than 30 sustained serious injuries. While the stampede broke outside the stadium, the players and staff continued with the celebrations inside the stadium.

We tried to discourage the government as well as RCB: Bengaluru police

In the wake of the horrific tragedy, senior police officers have revealed that they warned the state government as well as the franchise against conducting any victory parade. However, neither the government nor the franchise wanted to postpone the celebrations and ignored the advice from the police.

"We tried to discourage the government as well as the RCB franchise from Tuesday night against having any celebrations on Wednesday. We told them it would be ill-advised and recommended holding the event next Sunday when emotions would have cooled down," a senior officer told Deccan Herald.

Police further revealed that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru wanted the celebrations to happen instantly as their overseas players wanted to travel back home.

"We told them not to take out any procession, but to hold it in one place in an organised manner. Bring the players to the stadium and finish it there," said the officer.

"Their argument was that the players, especially the foreigners, would leave today or tomorrow. Naturally, the government would want to take mileage out of it. If the government had refused, that would have led to another kind of chaos," added the officer.
