In a major development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly decided to throw open the gates of a cricket stadium for the fans for the first time since the onset of the Wuhan virus (Covid-19) during the upcoming four-match Test series between India and England.
According to a report published in the Indian Express, the BCCI is all set to allow fans to witness the third Test between India and England at the refurbished Sardar Vallahbhai Patel Stadium at Motera near Ahmedabad.
The 3rd Test is a day-night affair and is scheduled to be held between February 24-28.
The India-England Test series will kickstart from February 05 with the iconic Chepauk playing host to the first two Tests. However, it is still not clear as to whether the fans will be allowed to watch the match from the stadium.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association had made it clear that it will not be taking the risk of inviting fans to the stadium. However, with the Tamil Nadu government allowing the entry of 50% capacity at sports events, it still remains to be seen whether TNCA will change its stance or not.
Meanwhile, with the newly-laid Motera boasting a seating capacity of 1,10,000, it can easily accommodate close to 50,000 fans i.e 50% capacity.
To mark the historic occasion, the Gujarat Cricket Association is looking to invite PM Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rejiju, and BJP President JP Nadda.
“As the seating capacity is more than a lakh, the GCA can easily accommodate 50 per cent crowds for the third and fourth Tests. The Government has allowed sports stadiums to run with 50 per cent capacity so it has been decided to allow fans for the matches in Ahmedabad. The media will also be able to cover the game from the stadium,” said a BCCI source as quoted by the Indian Express.
