The Indian camp has copped a massive blow ahead of the five-match Test series against England as an unnamed player tested positive for COVID-19. The development emerged late on Wednesday as the Indian players were in the middle of a 20-day break. Nevertheless, it has also come to light that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had told the players not to attend the sporting events held in England.
But players like Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant attended the Euro 2020 fixtures, while coach Ravi Shastri was spotted in the Wimbledon 2021 finals this Sunday. The player coming out with a COVID-19 positive test will not travel to Durham for the practice match with the remaining members. With the tourists set to take on the Three lions in the five-match series from the 4th of August, Indian cricketers received their second dose of vaccination in England.
Jay Shah’s letter revealed to have specifically telling the Indian cricketers not to attend the sporting events in England and to avoid crowded places. Shah’s letter would have come in the wake of England’s contingent’s seven members testing positive for COVID-19 before their three-match ODI series against Pakistan. It forced the ECB to assemble a new squad two days before the series. Moreover, a few members of the Sri Lankan side also suffered the same fate after their recent tour of England.
One of the Indian players has tested positive although he is largely asymptomatic currently: BCCI Source
A BCCI source confirmed the news that a player testing positive for COVID-19 is currently asymptomatic and shall not travel to Durham with the remaining members for the warm-up game ahead of the Test series. The delta variant, which has been responsible for the rapidly increases, has understood to be penetrated within the Indian team. Shah, in his letter, warned that the vaccine shot only provides protection and not total immunity against the virus.
“Yes, one of the players has tested positive although he is largely asymptomatic currently. He is in quarantine at an acquaintance’s place and won’t be travelling with the team to Durham on Thursday,” the BCCI source confirmed to PTI.
