In the 12th match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), the Mumbai Indians (MI) are going head-to-head with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday, March 31.
The match between the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians and the Ajinkya Rahane-led Kolkata Knight Riders is being played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
MI, known for being slow starters in the IPL, have lost their first two matches. However, they would also want to continue the trend of scraping through to the playoffs at the last minute and clinching the title.
What's hurting the 5-time champions is the absence of the premier right-arm quick Jasprit Bumrah and the poor show with the bat of the former captain Rohit Sharma.
The new-ball specialists - Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar - have also failed to set the stage on fire, which has resulted in the team getting under pressure early on in the innings.
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders don't have many issues like the Mumbai Indians. Their batting and bowling departments have been quite decent, and even in the absence of Sunil Narine against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, they won easily.
KKR's skipper Ajinkya Rahane will be at his actual home -Wankhede - on Monday where he has scored runs at an average of 40 against the five-time champions.
Talking about the head-to-head records, MI dominate KKR at the Wankhede Stadium with a 9-2 record, but the Knight Riders have won five of the last six matches between the teams. Overall, MI enjoy an edge as they lead by 23-11.
IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians win the toss and opt to field
Speaking at the toss, the Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya said that they would bowl first looking at the good pitch. He said:
"Knowing Wankhede, dew may or may not come. There might be some early swing, it plays well so we thought chasing is a good option. We want to get into good rhythm and kickstart. Overall, we want to play better cricket, we need to stay calm. Will comes back and we have a debutant - Ashwani Kumar."
Meanwhile, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane said that they wanted to bowl first as well, but were unsure of how the surface would act. He said:
"We wanted to bowl first as well but I was confused looking at the wicket, generally Wankede is a good batting surface so I feel it's a good toss to lose. There's a little breeze going on, no dew factor to deal with. We will look to post a good total on the board and I have confidence in our bowlers to defend. We are playing good cricket, every games gives a good opportunity to play good cricket. Lovely ground, we are looking to play good cricket. Sunil comes in in place of Mooen."
