The Mumbai Indians (MI) are hosting the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 38th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 20.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have had similar types of campaigns as they have not performed to their potential and are reeling at the No.7 and No.10 positions on the IPL Points Table with 6 and 4 points, respectively.
Had either the Chennai Super Kings or Mumbai Indians had a result not gone their way in their last game, the hype for the 'El Clasico' of the Indian Premier League would have been very low.
Notably, CSK managed to break their five-match losing streak by beating the Lucknow Super Giants, while MI beat the dangerous Sunrisers Hyderabad unit at home in their previous match.
Since their last encounter in IPL 2025, where CSK comprehensively won against MI, things have looked bleak for the Super Kings and great for the Mumbai Indians.
CSK lost their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad with injury, and their batters are struggling badly, while Mumbai Indians received a boost with the return of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah and are picking themselves in all facets of the game
Talking about the head-to-head record in the IPL, Mumbai Indians hold a slight edge of 20-18 over the Chennai Super Kings with a record of 7-5 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Also, since 2022, it is 5-1 in favour of CSK.
IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians win the toss and opt to field
Speaking at the toss, Hardik Pandya said that the CSK vs MI rivalry is an exciting one and urged his teammates to execute the plans properly. He said:
"We are gonna bowl first. It looks like a very good wicket. Same wicket we played against RCB. That gives us a chance to look at the wicket, identify our plans. It has a good covering of grass and will be a good batting wicket. Just executing our plans and keep doing what's working for us. That's exciting, we have not played to our potential and gives us an opportunity every game to play to our potential. The man (Dhoni) behind me, everyone knows how exciting it is when he comes, CSK v MI is always exciting. Same team."
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni revealed that they were also looking to bowl first. He said:
"We were looking to bowl first. The main reason is because dew has already started to set in, we have to see if it remains the same or gets worse. We are the bottom most team in the table, looking too far ahead will not help us, take one game at a time and keep pushing."
