Just days before the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green triggered a massive buzz with a clever and unexpected strategy. In the IPL 2026 auction on December 16, where all-rounders are once again the hottest property, Cameron Green has stunned everyone by listing himself not as an all-rounder but purely as a batter.

Seam-bowling all-rounders usually dominate bidding wars on the auction table because they bring rare balance to teams, especially in India, where spinners often rule. But with the auction rules and bidding order giving a huge advantage to early sets, the Australian star decided to make a smart move that could push him toward a record-breaking deal.

Cameron Green shocks everyone by entering into IPL 2026 Auction as a batter

When the BCCI revealed the shortlist of 350 players that will go under the hammer at the auction, fans and teams noticed something surprising next to Green’s name. Instead of joining the all-rounder category, he placed himself in the first set of batters, leaving one and all shocked.

This raised many questions, like whether the Aussie star is injured or planning to play only as a batter next season, but it was part of his IPL mini-auction strategy. In IPL auctions, batters are called first, followed by all-rounders and then bowlers, and that’s where Green played his game.

If Green had remained in the all-rounders’ category with a starting price of 2 crore, only teams with huge remaining purses could have joined the early bidding. That would have reduced his chances of hitting a massive payday.

Why has Cameron Green not listed himself in the all-rounders category?

By entering the auction as a batter, Cameron Green ensures every team gets an equal shot at him from the start, which could spark a fierce bidding war among the teams. However, Green might have been listed as a batter for the auction, but he can still continue as a full all-rounder in the IPL 2026.

The 25-year-old has already enjoyed two strong seasons—first with the Mumbai Indians in 2023 and then with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024. He has smashed 707 runs in 29 matches at a blistering strike rate of 153.69, including one century and two half-centuries, and also picked up 16 wickets with the ball at an economy of 9.07.

However, Green had missed the last season due to a back injury, and now he is eyeing a big comeback. His name now headlines Set 1 of the auction, joining big hitters like New Zealand’s Devon Conway, Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, South Africa’s David Miller, and India’s Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw.

While overseas players in this group start at a Rs 2 crore base price, Sarfaraz and Shaw enter with a 75-lakh tag after going unsold in last year’s mega auction. Additionally, the competition is also intense this year, as out of 350 shortlisted players, 240 are Indians and 110 are overseas, but only 77 slots are available, including just 31 for foreign players, to fill at the auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) enter the auction with the biggest purse of 64.30 crore and 13 open positions, while Chennai Super Kings follow with 43.4 crore and nine slots to fill.
