In a massive blow for the Mumbai Indians (MI), the star all-rounder and skipper Hardik Pandya is not playing the 8th match of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) on Saturday, April 4.

The Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals (DC) are hosting the Suryakumar Yadav-led Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Both Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have got solid squads and started off their campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with comfortable victories.

Why is Hardik Pandya not playing today’s match against the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026?

Suryakumar Yadav walked out for the toss with Axar Patel, and it left many surprised. Speaking at the toss, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that Hardik Pandya "was not well" and he was "not fit" for the match against the Delhi Capitals.

Now, for obvious reasons, Indian cricket fans are curious to know why Hardik Pandya suddenly went out of the MI vs DC IPL 2026 match. As of now, there is no report hinting at a fresh injury. However, the stand-in captain of the Mumbai Indians for today's match, Suryakumar Yadav, mentioned that Pandya was not fit enough to play the match.

"He's not well, doesn't look good, so he was not fit for today's game. So just getting into his shoes today," Yadav informed about the reason behind Pandya's absence from the match.

Multiple changes MI has made to take on Delhi Capitals

Along with Hardik, there are a few more changes MI has made for the contest today at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Deepak Chahar joins the playing combination in place of Hardik, Corbin Bosch is named in place of Trent Boult, and Mitchell Santner is brought in to take over Allah Ghazanfar's spot.

"Quite a few changes. Deepak Chahar comes in for Hardik. Corbin Bosch comes in for Boulty, that's a tactical change. Boulty had a good game in the last game at Wankhede. And Mitch Santner comes in for Allah Ghazanfar," Suryakumar Yadav mentioned.

There is another theory related to Hardik Pandya, which is also quite sensible as India is gearing up for the ICC ODI World Cup which will be next year. Like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya is also a key asset of Indian cricket. To play a full 50-overs tournament, players will have to keep themselves fit mentally and physically. Reports suggest that the pace bowling all-rounder has been preparing himself for a 10-over bowling quota.

Unlike T20 cricket, where each bowler is allowed to bowl a maximum of 4 overs, in ODIs, a bowler can go for a 10-over spell. Without proper fitness, it is very nearly impossible for someone to deliver 10 overs in back-to-back ODI matches. Pandya has a history of injuries, so ahead of the ODI World Cup, his workload management could be under the scanner.
