The ICC has revealed why only Haris Rauf sustained the two-match suspension, while no one else who was accused under similar sections after the Asia Cup 2025 controversy has been suspended by the International Cricket Council.
The Asia Cup Trophy led to a huge fiasco when the India and Pakistan players mocked them with controversial gestures. Pakistan bowler Haris Rauf, batsman Sahibzada Farhan, and Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav were all booked for having made controversial actions with their hands.
The ICC has considered these regulations under the Level 1 breaches, which are known to carry a penalty ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and a few demerit points.
ICC reveals the reason behind Haris Rauf's suspension
Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf has been handed a two-match suspension after accumulating four demerit points within a period of 2 years, that is, 24 months. This took place following multiple breaches in the ICC code of conduct.
According to ICC rules, four or more demerit points within the 24-month window lead to suspension points. The accumulation of suspension points leads to a ban from a Test or from two limited-overs games. They remain within the player's record for two years.
Haris Rauf was found guilty of "conduct that brings the game into disrepute" - Article 2.21 - in two separate incidents during India-Pakistan clashes on September 14 and September 28. Since he reached four demerit points, which led to 2 suspension points, Haris Rauf has been ruled out from the next two ODIs on the 4th of November and the 6th of November against South Africa.
Arshdeep Singh cleared of any offence
Alongside the Pakistani player, several other players were found guilty and were handed their penalties by the ICC Elite panel of match referees. Suryakumar Yadav was fined 30% of his match fees and also received two demerit points for breaching the same article, 2.21.
While Sahibzada Farhan was let go with a formal warning, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh was cleared of any offence after clearing the alleged breach of Article 2.6. He was not found guilty by the Match referee, Andy Pycroft.
However, in the general scheme of things, Arshdeep's actions were much more obscene than anyone else as he launched a direct attack on the Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf; however, his conduct did not occur while featuring on the field for India.
Jasprit Bumrah had accepted the charges, ruling out the need for a formal hearing
The veteran Indian pacer played all games in the Asia Cup against Pakistan. Bumrah was seen taking up a new role in the Asia Cup, as he completed his spell mostly within the powerplay and bowled just one over at the death.
In the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, Bumrah cleaned up Haris Rauf with a beaming yorker and then made a plane crash gesture with his hand, making a mockery of the Pakistan pacer.
However, Bumrah had accepted charges under the breach of Article 2.21 and received an official warning alongside a demerit point. Since he accepted the offence, there was no need for a formal hearing.
