The star 27-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been snubbed from the squad for the Asia Cup 2025.
Rishabh Pant, who was part of India's T20 World Cup 2024-winning team, is not selected for the continental tournament due to an injury.
Rishabh Pant suffered an injury during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
India Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant picked up an injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test match against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.
He sustained a foot injury during the 68th over and was forced to retire hurt after scoring 37 runs. Pant got injured while playing a premeditated reverse sweep off Chris Woakes and under-edged the ball onto his boot.
The wicketkeeper-batsman looked in immense pain after suffering the blow to his foot and was immediately carried off the field in a buggy.
The scans further revealed that Pant had fractured his foot. Despite that, he walked out to bat for India in the 102nd over and received a standing ovation from the spectators as he limped his way to the middle.
He was in visible discomfort but managed to hit a good fifty (54 runs off 75 balls) that helped him become India's leading run-getter in ICC World Test Championship history.
Rishabh Pant ruled out of the Asia Cup and the West Indies Test
Pant's injury is quite a serious one, and it has ruled him out of the Asia Cup as well as the subsequent home Test series against the West Indies National Cricket Team.
"Pant is now confirmed to miss both the Asia Cup and the upcoming home Test series against West Indies," the report in TOI read
However, Rishabh Pant was not a certainty in the India squad even if he was fit because Sanju Samson has been the first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in T20Is for a while.
Pant also didn't do enough with the bat in the IPL 2025 to win back the trust of the selection committee. After becoming the most expensive player in IPL history, he scored just 269 runs for LSG with the best of 118* and at an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.16.
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma have been named as the two wicketkeeper-batsmen for the Asia Cup 2025.
Shubman Gill named T20I vice-captain
The India Test skipper, Shubman Gill, has made his return to the T20I squad and has been named the vice-captain. Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar feels that Gill will soon take over the all-format skipper. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, he said:
"They asked Ajit Agarkar whether he is soon to become the all-format captain with the current captain (T20I) sitting right next to the selector. It tells you the mindset of how everyone, including the selectors, are thinking. You understand with this selection that Shubman is in time going to be the all-format captain and that's where they are positioning him. Great pick and it's going to be an interesting next 12 months in Shubman Gill's life."
