The India vs England Test series has taken another new turn, as the Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has suffered another major blow to his right foot, which ruled him out of the day's play.
After the incident, when England all-rounder Liam Dawson was asked about Rishabh Pant's injury, he expressed concern for the batter, foreseeing no further action from him during the Manchester Test.
Rishabh Pant looked fluent until then and came in to bat alongside Sai Sudharsan after the English skipper dismissed the Indian skipper, Shubman Gill. Pant was once again easily dominating the English bowlers; he scored a quick 37 off just 47 balls.
England spinner gives massive verdict on Rishabh Pant's injury
When Rishabh Pant built on a convincing partnership alongside India's new no. 3, Sai Sudharsan, he looked flawless with the bat. After a good 37 off 46 balls, Pant tried one of his most extraordinary shots against Chris Woakes.
The batter attempted to reverse-sweep Woakes, but it didn't go as planned. Woakes bowled a fuller delivery, and Pant, who was no more in a shape to retreat, went on with the shot, and the ball went on to hit the front boot of the batter.
The England team went up in a loud appeal, but UltraEdge showed a faint under-edge that immediately ruled out England's review; however, the ball also seemed to be angling away from the off-stump.
Pant, who was left writhing with pain, was immediately looked after by the medical staff. There were clear signs of visible swelling and bleeding from the area, and after on-field treatment, he was carried off the field on a medical cart.
Post the day's play, Liam Dawson showed worry towards Pant's possible return on the field for the match.
“Thoughts with Rishabh Pant, but can’t see him take any further part in the match,” said Dawson, reflecting on the seriousness of the injury, as reported by The Times of India.
India's promising Day 1 doomed by skipper Stokes
India, the team trailing in the series so far by a margin of 2-1, advanced to Manchester to level the series before the final match at The Oval. Losing their 14th consecutive toss, India was once again put to bat first by the England skipper.
India made a firm start at Manchester, as the openers were not dismissed till lunch. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal both went on to put on an opening stand of 94 runs for the first wicket. KL Rahul was the first wicket to fall in the second innings of play, as Chris Woakes removed the opening batter.
The other Indian opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, batted more cautiously, giving up his extravagant batting approach. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell after having made 58 runs, as he was the second Indian wicket to fall.
Sai Sudharsan did not get much support from Shubman Gill, the Indian skipper, as once again he was dismissed early by Ben Stokes. Pant and Sudharsan's partnership was very promising until Pant's injury was followed by Sudharsan's wicket.
Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur both remained not out on 19 runs each. India ended Day 1 with 264/4.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is enrolled in the list of elites
The Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal enrolled his name among legends; he turned the joint fastest Indian batter to have scored 1000 runs against England, taking just 16 innings to reach the milestone, levelling with Mohammed Azharuddin and only behind Rahul Dravid.
While among Indian batters, he has now levelled with Rohit Sharma for having the most 50+ scores in Test cricket against England, surpassing teammate KL Rahul. He has also joined the elite list alongside Donald Bradman and George Headley to reach 1000 runs against England at an average above 70.
