Rishabh Pant will be named as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, according to a report in RevSportz. Team India is currently in the rebuilding phase in Test cricket after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin announced their retirements from the longest format.

Rishabh Pant has emerged as the front-runner to take over the vice-captaincy despite his poor performances in IPL 2025.

Rishabh Pant in the new role

Rishabh Pant is also the first-choice wicket-keeper for India in the white jersey. With vice-captaincy on his shoulders, Pant’s role in Test cricket will increase for the Indian team.

Pant’s Test career has been a highlight of his career as his best came in the red-ball format and first Indian wicket-keeper batter to score a ton in Australia, England, and South Africa.

This will be the first big opportunity for the wicket-keeper as Indian management is looking to rebuild the team around the new generation, and thus, despite having Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul, Pant is having an upper hand to take up vice vice-captaincy role.

Jasprit Bumrah’s record as skipper

When Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the red-ball format, Bumrah was the vice-captain of the team, and everyone thought that Rohit’s departure would open the gates for Bumrah in the captaincy role.

But the selectors are concerned about his fitness, and thus, they are looking for two young players to take up the new role.

Bumrah has captained one Test match in England and two Test matches in Australia. Bumrah won just one out of three Test matches.

India’s probable squad for the England tour

The retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has opened a void in the batting order. There is only KL Rahul left in the top order, who has experience in playing overseas Test matches.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to open the batting for India in the England tour, as in his last Australia tour, Jaiswal scored a ton on Australian soil as well.

Sai Sudarshan might debut in the England tour, and Shubman Gill will bat at no. 4, according to the reports. Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan and Shreyas Iyer are also in contention to make it to the squad.

Rishabh Pant is the first-choice wicket-keeper for the Indian team. Dhruv Jurel will be his reserve in the England tour.

India might go with two spin options for the English tour, in which the question will arise on who will partner Ravindra Jadeja. Will Washington Sundar edge out Kuldeep Yadav with his batting advantage?

Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammad Shami will likely be the pace attack for the England tour. The official squad will likely announced on May 24.
