Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, who has largely struggled with his injury since the England tour, is all set to make his comeback to the field with the coming Ranji Trophy from the 25th of October. The BCCI's medical team would, however, be assessing his recovery, with 10th October set as his return date.
India is currently playing the home Test series against the West Indies, and wicket-keeper batter Pant missed out on the opportunity to feature in a home contest. He also missed out on the Australia white-ball tour and is expected to make a comeback to international cricket with the South Africa series. Dhruv Jurel has been roped in as his replacement across formats.
Rishabh Pant's return date finalised by the BCCI
Rishabh Pant suffered the injury long back in the England series, where he had amassed 479 runs in the 7 innings over the 4 matches he played. The batter averaged 68.42 in the series, but was ruled out after he fractured his right foot in an attempt to reverse sweep Chris Woakes.
Since then, he has been recovering at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Just a few days back, he was reportedly seen having resumed batting practice in the nets. Meanwhile, Pant would be cleared to play by October 10.
“As of now, there is a likelihood he could be cleared by Oct 10. An assessment is due this week. It has been a long recovery for him. The BCCI medical team doesn’t want to take any chances with him,” a BCCI source told TOI.
Pant in talks with DDCA President for a Ranji Trophy comeback
The same report has suggested that Rishabh Pant has also spoken with Rohan Jaitley, the current president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). He is likely citing the Ranji Trophy 2025, which starts on October 15, as the catalyst for his comeback to competitive cricket.
“Pant has said he should be available for the Ranji Trophy matches in Delhi from Oct 25. He has conveyed that it will be subject to fitness and clearance obtained from the BCCI medical team,” a top DDCA official told TOI.
Ajit Agarkar hopes for Rishabh Pant's return for the South Africa Tests
Recently, while announcing the squad for the West Indies 2-match home series, the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, said that Rishabh Pant is expected to return ahead of the South Africa Tests.
"With regard to Rishabh, I don't think he's quite made this series. He won't be ready, but like I said, we're hopeful that by the time South Africa comes around, he's 100% fit," said Agarkar.
Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed as the deputy of Shubman Gill in the home series, since the regular vice-captain, Rishabh Pant, has missed out on the series. Jadeja has been rewarded for his vast experience and has also amassed 516 runs in the series in England.
