Rishabh Pant has once again left fans stunned, blasting another jaw-dropping century on Day 4 of the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley, and Ravi Shastri shut down the constant chatter about the star wicketkeeper-batter’s so-called "reckless" style.
Many opine that Rishabh Pant’s batting doesn’t follow logic, but the former Indian head coach believes that the left-handed batter is playing smart cricket and he knows exactly what he is doing.
Pant’s fearless style raises many eyebrows, but Shastri pointed out that there is a method behind it and it is not just about big hitting but also a clever and calculated approach.
Ravi Shastri defends Rishabh Pant’s madness after explosive twin hundreds
Well, the Indian vice-captain didn’t start the day too well. He looked shaky in the morning, struggling to find his rhythm. But after having some words with himself, Pant walked out and completely turned the game on its head. With fire in his eyes and calm in his heart, he tore into the English attack.
He began attacking right away after the lunch break, especially going after Shoaib Bashir with two monster sixes.
And from there, the runs came fast, scoring a remarkable knock of 118 runs off 140 balls that was followed by his 134-run knock in the first innings at Headingley.
In the process, Pant made history as he became only the second Indian wicket-keeper to score two centuries in a single Test match.
He is now among only seven Indians to ever do so in Tests. Following his masterclass in the ongoing first Test against England, Shastri praised the way Pant knows when to change gears.
Rishabh Pant knows when to counterattack: Ravi Shastri
The commentator said that Pant’s style may look wild, but he has a sharp mind that understands the game. He also pointed out that the vice-captain picks the right time to attack, which makes him dangerous.
Shastri also said that if Pant had managed to convert his 90s into hundreds in the past, he would already have many more Test centuries to his name.
Ravi Shastri was quoted as saying by Sky Sports, “People say Pant's batting defies logic, but there is an element of a sharp cricket brain behind it. He knows when to counterattack. It comes off on some occasions and on others it doesn't, but if he had converted some of those seven dismissals in the 90s, he would have had a double-digit number of Test hundreds.”

Ravi Shastri hails KL Rahul’s class and Rishabh Pant’s flamboyance in England
While Pant’s fearless hitting has pushed the game forward, Shastri didn’t forget to laud KL Rahul’s solid and stylish knock of 137 runs that added balance to India’s second innings.
He noted that India must be thrilled with both Rahul’s technical masterpiece and Pant’s flamboyance in England.
Shastri signed off by saying, “Pant has taken the game forward. He has given India a headache in terms of when they should declare and how many runs they get. There is plenty of food for thought, but India will be very happy after a technical masterpiece from Rahul and the flamboyance and exuberance that you can't imagine from Pant.”
