Rishabh Pant's knock as an opener was cut short due to an unfortunate runout. The skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had to go back to the dugout after scoring only 7 off 9. It was the Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Mukesh Kumar who ran Rishabh Pant out.

On the last delivery of the third over, when DC was on 19, the opener Mitchell Marsh was looking in fine touch, but Pant was dismissed. Delhi lost its first batter, and it was costly. To utilise the power as much as possible, the DC team management promoted Pant to open the innings. Which certainly did not work out at the Ekana Stadium. Pant looked in disbelief as he had to head back quickly.

Marsh punched the ball down the ground to rotate the strike. Mukesh Kumar, a pacer, who was on his follow-through, stretched his right arm to stop the ball. The ball got deflected by the fingers of the bowler and lashed on the stumps. By the time Pant was outside of his crease. According to the rules, it was run out.

IPL 2026: A stage to prove himself for Rishabh Pant

The ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 is considered highly important for the keeper-batter as he has barely played in the format since the conclusion of IPL 2025. In the last group stage match of the 2025 season, the southpaw smashed a century against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). After that, he featured for Team India in different formats, but remained mostly out of the Twenty20 format on bigger stages.

Later, multiple injury concerns also put the brakes on his progress. Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, he was about to play against New Zealand in the ODI series, but injured himself before the first match of the series during a training session. Rishabh Pant needed to spend a lot of time outside competitive matches to regain their match fitness through a strict rehabilitation routine.

A classic punch to open the account

As he makes a comeback in the format with the Lucknow Super Giants, fans are expecting to see some cracking knocks for him in the ongoing IPL season.

Pant started his innings against the Delhi Capitals with a fine stroke against Mukesh Kumar in the opening over of the match. The guided a full-length delivery to the boundary rope with a gentle push. Pant classically got the boundary.

But soon, after sustaining a few dot balls, he tried to do fancy stuff. In the same over, Rishabh tried to go over the keeper's head, but failed. The ball went inches away from the stumps; Pant survived for a while.

His luck soon ran out as the deflected ball hit the stumps at the end of the third over. Apart from Mitchell Marsh, the other top-order batters of LSG could not do much in the power play.
