Riyan Parag has dealt with a major blow despite leading the Rajasthan Royals to their first win of the ongoing IPL 2025 season on Sunday, March 30. After suffering back-to-back defeats, the Rajasthan Royals managed to stage a thrilling comeback in the tournament on their second home ground.
In the 11th game of the ongoing IPL 2025, Parag led his team to a nerve-wracking six-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in a high-pressure encounter at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. It was the first win for the Assam lad as captain, but his joy was hit by a major blow.

With this offense, Parag became the second captain to face a fine for maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing IPL 2025. Earlier, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya was handed a fine for the same breach after his team’s 36-run loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, a major change has been implemented in the rule book, as the BCCI has decided that captains will not face bans for repeated slow over-rate offenses in the IPL. This decision was made during a captain's meeting on March 21 in Mumbai, where all leaders agreed to the call.

'Captains will not face a match ban for the slow over-rate offense'
A BCCI source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz about the rule: “The captain will be penalized with demerit points but will not face a match ban for the slow over-rate. The Level 1 offense will be charged 25 to 75 percent match fees with demerit points, which will be calculated for the next three years. A Level 2 offense, if exactly deemed serious, will result in four demerit points.
For every 4 demerit points accumulated, the match referee can impose a penalty, either in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points could potentially lead to a match ban in the future. But for slow overrate, it won't be a match ban (immediately).”
Notably, the Rajasthan Royals will next face the Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh in the ongoing IPL 2025 on April 5.
Despite the thrilling win over CSK, the Royals are languishing at the ninth spot in the IPL 2025 points table with only 2 points from three games so far.
