Former South African cricketer Robin Peterson has been named as the head of the MI Cape Town franchise ahead of the second edition of SA20. Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been appointed as the bowling coach of the franchise for the next season.

Robin Peterson and Lasith Malinga have been associated with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Peterson represented the Mumbai-based franchise in IPL 2012, while Malinga played for the team for more than ten seasons.

The South African was previously associated with the MI Cape Town team as the general manager during the inaugural SA20 season, in which they finished at the bottom of the table. He will now assume the position of head coach, succeeding Simon Katich.

Lasith Malinga will take over the charge of bowling coach for MI Cape Town from former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram. Notably, the pacer recently served as the bowling coach for the MI New York, which clinched the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) title.

Hashim Amla will remain the batting coach of MICT for the SA20 2024. Rashid Khan, who captained last season, Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran, and Dewald Brevis were retained by the team ahead of the auction, which is scheduled for September 27 in Johannesburg.

MI Capetown Finished At Bottom Of Points Table

The Cape Town-based franchise failed to meet expectations in the first edition of franchise cricket in South Africa. The MICT finished at the bottom of the points table with three wins in ten matches, despite having overwhelming T20 superstars in their squad.

The international stars, including Rashid Khan, delivered disappointing performances. Rassie van der Dussen was the sole player in the top 10 run-getters, scoring 243 runs at a strike rate of only 122.11. Kagiso Rabada finished at No. 12 on the bowling chart with 11 wickets.
