The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to elect a new joint secretary during the upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM). Rohan Jaitley, who is the president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), is widely regarded as the frontrunner to take over the role of BCCI joint secretary, as per IANS.

The BCCI joint secretary position has been vacant since Devajit Saikia's promotion to secretary in December 2024, following Jay Shah's election as ICC chairman. As per BCCI regulations, the vacancy must be filled within 45 days, and the BCCI has scheduled a Special General Meeting on March 1 in Mumbai.

BCCI to Elect New Joint Secretary at SGM on March 1 in Mumbai

The board has officially informed all state associations about the upcoming election, with the sole agenda being the appointment of the new Joint Secretary. A notice for the Special General Meeting has been sent out, scheduled for 12:00 PM IST on March 1 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

“Notice is hereby given for a Special General Meeting of the BCCI which will be held at 12:00 PM IST on March 1, at BCCI headquarters at Mumbai, to transact the business of Election and Induction of the Joint Secretary of BCCI," the apex board said in a statement.

Devajit Saikia Vacated Joint Secretary Role After Promotion to Secretary

The upcoming Special General Meeting will be the second in less than two months. The previous SGM, held on January 12, saw Devajit Saikia elected as secretary and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as treasurer, both unopposed.

Saikia had earlier vacated the joint secretary role after being promoted to secretary following Jay Shah’s departure. The BCCI has adhered to the mandatory 21-day notice for convening this meeting.

Rohan Jaitley Emerges as the Strongest Contender for the BCCI Joint Secretary Role

Former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Abhishek Dalmiya and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official Sanjay Naik are also in the race. However, Rohan Jaitley is considered the strongest contender for the vacant role due to his administrative experience and rising influence within Indian cricket.

If elected, Jaitley’s appointment would strengthen his position in the Indian cricket administration. The role of the Joint Secretary involves managing key administrative tasks and working closely with other board members to ensure smooth operations.

During the second SGM on March 1, Team India will be competing in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. The tournament will begin on February 19, with India facing Bangladesh in their opening match on February 20. India will play Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2, respectively.

The Champions Trophy will follow a hybrid model. Matches featuring India and one semifinal will be held in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament will take place in Pakistan across Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi.
