However, Rohit confirmed his intention to play in the 2027 edition and promised fans that he would give his best to help India win the coveted title.
After guiding India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in March, Rohit and Virat are set to make their international comeback in the three-match ODI series against Australia. The series is not only their return to action but also serves as an early step in their build-up towards the next ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future Under the Spotlight
Rohit Sharma’s future in the 50-over format has been under scrutiny. He retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph and stepped away from Tests earlier this year. The batter remains active only in ODIs in the international format for India.
The 38-year-old narrowly missed out on ODI World Cup glory in 2023. He led the Indian team to the final unbeaten before a crushing defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad. However, there had been doubts over his form, fitness, and longevity.
Rohit has reportedly undergone a strict training regimen under former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, shedding nearly 10 kilograms ahead of the Australia tour. The first ODI match between India and Australia will be played in Perth on Sunday, October 19.
Shubman Gill Appointed India’s New ODI Captain
The BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain. However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been retained in the squad to provide stability and guidance to the young team. Their experience and influence are expected to be crucial both on and off the field.
With no burden of captaincy, Rohit can focus entirely on his batting. The seasoned opener is also on the verge of a major milestone, needing just 10 more runs to become the first Indian batter to score 1,000 ODI runs against Australia in Australia.
Rohit has scored 990 runs in 19 innings at an impressive average of 58.23, including four centuries and two fifties. Only Sachin Tendulkar (1,046) has scored more runs in this elite list of batters.
