Team India captain Rohit Sharma has opened up about missing the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia in Perth. Rohit Sharma dropped a hint regarding missing the first Test of the five-match series, adding that he is not too sure if he will be playing that game.

India suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash at home for the first time after losing the third Test against New Zealand by 25 runs. Chasing a target of 147 runs, India was bowled out for just 121. The Rohit Sharma-led side lost the first two matches of the series against New Zealand in Bengaluru and Pune.

Not Sure Whether I Will Be Going - Rohit Sharma

Speaking on Jio Cinema, former cricketer and broadcaster Abhinav Mukund confirmed rumors that Rohit Sharma is expecting his second child with his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, which may lead to him missing the upcoming Test match.

In a post-match press conference after the Mumbai Test, Rohit responded to these rumors. He expressed uncertainty about his availability but stated that he was keeping his fingers crossed that he could play the game. He stated that the team's focus is on the upcoming series against Australia.

"Not sure whether I will be going, fingers crossed, We will focus on (upcoming) Australia series, and not look too far ahead," Rohit said after the third Test match in Mumbai.

If Rohit is unable to play in the opening Test, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team. Abhimanyu Easwaran is expected to step in as his replacement. Following India’s 0-3 defeat to New Zealand at home, the upcoming BGT series is important to secure a spot in the World Test Championship 2025 final.

We Made A Lot Of Mistakes - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma admitted that the team made a lot of mistakes throughout the series, particularly their failure to score enough runs in the first innings of the matches in Bengaluru and Pune. He added that the team needed to perform better to chase the target even after gaining a 30-run lead in Mumbai.

"We made a lot of mistakes and we will have to accept it. We did not put enough runs on the board in the 1st innings (in Bengaluru and Pune) and we were behind in the game, here, we got a 30-run lead, we thought we were ahead, the target was achievable as well, we had to do better though. You want runs on the board as well, that is something that was there in my mind," Rohit added.

India Set To Play Five Test Matches In Australia

India need to secure four wins and a draw to qualify for the World Test Championship Final. The series will commence on November 22 in Perth, followed by matches in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. For the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the selectors have selected 18 players and 3 reserves.
