Rohit Sharma has reached a major milestone by completing 15 years with the Mumbai Indians (MI). The veteran opening batter joined the franchise 15 years ago and grew from a young talent into a senior leader, guiding the team through many successful seasons in the Indian Premier League’s (MI) history.

The former captain remains a key figure for Mumbai Indians even after stepping down from the role. His experience brings stability and confidence, while fans continue to celebrate his journey and impact on the franchise over the years. The right-handed batter began his IPL 2026 campaign with a 78 off 38 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He shared a 148-run opening stand with Ryan Rickelton, helping Mumbai Indians secure a big win and end their 13-year streak of losing opening matches.

However, his form has dipped slightly. He scored 35 off 26 against Delhi Capitals (DC) and just 5 off 6 balls in a rain-affected game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) while chasing 151 in 11 overs. He has 118 runs in three matches at an average of 39.33 and a strike rate of 168.57.

Mumbai Indians Struggle Early in IPL 2026, Set to Face In-Form RCB at Wankhede

Mumbai Indians have had a mixed start to IPL 2026 and are currently placed eighth on the points table with two points from three matches. They began their campaign with a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders but then suffered back-to-back defeats against Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

The team, known for comebacks, will depend heavily on Rohit Sharma finding consistency with the bat. Mumbai Indians will next face defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru-based franchise secured victories in their first two matches and are in third place on the points table.

Rohit Sharma’s Journey with Deccan Chargers in IPL

Before joining Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma played for Deccan Chargers. In the inaugural season, he scored 404 runs while batting in the middle order. Rohit began his IPL career with a duck against Kolkata Knight Riders but bounced back with 66 off 36 in the next match.

Deccan Chargers later promoted Rohit to the number three position for the final matches. The team finished last in 2008 with only two wins, but Rohit was a key performer, contributing nearly one-fifth of the team’s total runs that season.

The part-time off-spinner also took a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians in Centurion during the 2009 season. Deccan Chargers reached the semi-finals in 2010 before losing to Chennai Super Kings. Overall, he made 1,170 runs in 44 innings for Deccan Chargers before moving to Mumbai Indians.
