Months after the ODI match in London, Rohit Sharma finally addressed the speculation about his possible retirement from the India National Cricket Team. Many speculated that the former India captain could play his final match for the national team at the iconic Lord's during the team's recent tour of the United Kingdom.

The series was crucial for the Indian cricket team as part of their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. As the team coached by Gautam Gambhir tended to promote fresh talents over the experienced candidates, it was largely reported that Rohit Sharma was all set to take retirement from the Men in Blue.

Rohit Sharma proved the retirement speculations wrong

Proving all of the speculations wrong, Rohit smashed a century in that match against England, but he also continues playing for the national side in the 50-over format. With the century, he became the first Indian men's batter to score an ODI century at Lord's on July 19, 2026, during the third ODI against England.

Months after the match, despite waves of speculation, Rohit kept his mouth shut on the topic. Recently, during a ‘Family Full House with Rohit Sharma’ episode, the opener raised the topic and called it only a rumour.

Rohit Sharma calls the speculations 'rumor'

In the episode, the heart of the show, Rohit, and guests actress Karishma Kapoor and actor Chunky Pandey were answering a fan query about a ‘famous rumor’ they had heard about themselves. While replying to the question, the T20 World Cup-winning former Team India captain mentioned the Lord's ODI match against England.

"The rumor I have heard about me, the rumor I did hear and I am still hearing, is that I am going to retire. I hope all of these rumors about all three of us have been debunked," Rohit replied.

From the comments of the batter, it became clear that at least for now, he has no plans to hang up his boots. He has retired from the T20Is and Tests, but keeps himself active in the One Day International format, and is likely to continue in the upcoming days as well.

Possible rift between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar

During India's away series against England, several media reports claimed that Rohit was not on the same page with the head coach Gautam Gambhir and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar has stepped down from his role, and former India cricketer Pragyan Ojha is currently working as the head of the men's national cricket team's selection committee. It is known that Ojha and Rohit share a very close relationship with each other.

Additionally, in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, 'Hitman' is in form as well. In the previous two appearances for the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma registered 101 against West Indies in Guwahati and then a 92-run knock in New Chandigarh against the same opponent.

Meanwhile, Rohit has started his training in Mumbai amid the ongoing 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season.
