Indian batting stalwart Rohit Sharma has not only made a strong comeback to international cricket but has also ended his long wait to claim the No. 1 spot on the ICC ODI Batting Rankings. Sharma, with his unstoppable form in Australia, surpassed Shubman Gill to claim the top spot.
India might not have had a desired result on their tour to Australia, but for Rohit Sharma, it was the biggest positive of recent times. The determined Indian opener shed 11 kgs to gain fitness ahead of the tour, and it paid off as he dominated with 200+ runs and an average of 101.
Rohit Sharma becomes the No. 1-ranked ODI batter after the Australia tour
The Indian opener was sacked as captain ahead of the tour, which might have forced him to strengthen his determination further. Rohit hit back hard at the Australian bowlers after being dismissed for just 8 runs in the first game in Perth. He top-scored for India in Adelaide with a 73-run innings and backed it with a splendid century in Sydney.
On the back of his stellar show in Australia, Rohit climbed two spots to take the top spot in the ICC ODI Batting Rankings. He has 781 rating points, 17 more than Ibrahim Zadran, who remains in the second spot. Shubman Gill has slipped two positions down to No. 3 after a poor run in the same Australia tour.

Shubman Gill faces an early sink after being named ODI Captain
The new Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, had long held the top spot for India in the ICC Rankings. However, Rohit Sharma went past him, while he slipped two spots, which was a terrible fall for the 25-year-old youngster.
Gill's best score was 24 in the Third ODI at Sydney in the series; moreover, he failed to score that many runs in the Champions Trophy as well. At the back of these performances, he slipped even behind Ibrahim Zadran, the Afghan batter who took the second spot after his great show against Bangladesh.
Shreyas Iyer gains a spot in the top 10; Kohli sinks after consecutive ducks
Injured Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has gained a spot in the ICC ODI Rankings as he now goes past Shai Hope to the no. 9 spot. This is after a dominating show in the second ODI at Adelaide, where he contributed 61 runs in the third-wicket partnership alongside Rohit.
Virat Kohli, the veteran batter who scored two consecutive ducks at Perth and Adelaide, saw his lowest low in his career and has hence seen a decline in the rankings. Despite his 74* in the final game, Kohli goes down from no. 5 to no. 6 and is surpassed by New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell, who led them to victory against England. Babar Azam remains irreplaceable at no. 4.
