Shubman Gill To Lead Team India in ODI Format

According to the Indian Express, Shubman Gill is expected to take over the ODI captaincy for the three-match series against Australia, while veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be part of the squad.

The selectors discussed this move with Gill, aiming to groom him as India’s leader for the 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Gill even attended the selection meeting, with head coach Gautam Gambhir kept informed about the planned leadership transition from Rohit to the younger skipper.

"It is understood that Rohit and Kohli remain in the scheme of things for ODIs for now but will be playing their first competitive matches in eight months. Their last game was the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, which India won under Rohit’s captaincy by beating New Zealand by four wickets in Dubai," the report read.

Rohit Sharma Led India’s White-Ball Team to Two ICC Titles

Rohit Sharma led India’s white-ball team to two ICC titles, the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

However, after a disappointing series in Australia, he dropped himself from the final Test in Sydney due to a dip in form and later resigned from Test captaincy ahead of the England tour.

In his first Test series as captain, Shubman Gill scored 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40, including four centuries, and guided India to a 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Gill has played 55 ODIs, amassing 2,775 runs at an average of 59.04, with eight centuries, including a double hundred (208) against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023. He is one of the few batters part of the Indian team in all three formats
