Rohit Sharma will be leading the Indian team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as Jay Shah officially confirmed the news during the renaming ceremony of the Rajkot stadium.

The Indian skipper was asked to focus on the longer formats after India’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2022 where he took the team to the semi-finals but faced a heart-breaking defeat against England. Hardik Pandya was leading the national team in T20Is in Rohit’s absence and there were talks regarding him leading the side in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha welcomes the decision to give the captaincy to Rohit Sharma as he talks on CricBuzz regarding this. He believed that a captain should be fit and present to lead the side and Hardik Pandya has faced a lot of injury concerns in his career. He also reckons Rohit Sharma has handled the national team well referring to his captaincy in the ODI World Cup where India won 10 consecutive matches before falling short to Australia in the finals.

“See, the decision has been made now and I am very sure that he must know and the talks must have been going on because when we were watching Hardik Pandya becoming the captain in the T20 format but unfortunately you also have to see whether your captain is fit or not, how many matches he has played so if you are talking about the national duty then I think Rohit Sharma has handled the team pretty well. You were talking about the World Cup where India won 10 out of 10 games but the last match did not go in their favour,” said Pragyan Ojha on Cricbuzz.

“You want that person to lead the side who has been handling the team and who is present there because a captain should be present because he knows how the team is moving forward and which mentality is there among the players. The biggest reason is the partnership between the coach and the captain which we saw during the ODI World Cup and I think that is why the think tank has gone with Rohit Sharma.”

Rohit Sharma has been a great captain and gave his best during the ODI World Cup but failed to win the final game where he even scored a quickfire 47 to give the team a flying start in the powerplay. He can be a great asset for the Indian team if he plays in the T20 World Cup the way he played in the ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma is currently leading the Indian team in the five-match Test series against England and the series is currently leveled 1-1. He is one of the few captains who is still undefeated in bilateral Test series and he would like to continue this record. India lost the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs but then made a terrific comeback in Vizag to win the second Test by 106 runs.
