Fans showered praise on Team India opener Rohit Sharma for his relentless energy on the field during the second ODI against New Zealand. With India finding it hard to defend a par score, the captain’s animated presence triggered chants of “Hamara captain kaisa ho… Rohit Sharma jaisa ho” from the crowd.
Daryl Mitchell played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 131 off 117 balls as New Zealand chased down 285 in 47.3 overs to beat India by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. Earlier, India scored 284 runs for seven wickets, following a century from KL Rahul, who scored 112 off 92 balls.
Rohit Sharma Continues to Receive Massive Fan Support
The home team struggled to defend the total, prompting sections of the crowd to break into a popular chant: “Hamara captain kaisa ho… Rohit Sharma jaisa ho.”

I want to move on, but in every match I see fans in the stadium chanting such things. When was the last time a player received this much love long after losing… pic.twitter.com/v4XpYIGhfk
It is rare for a player to receive such widespread admiration long after stepping down from leadership roles. Rohit has seen this support continue in recent times - first after giving up the IPL captaincy of the Mumbai Indians, and now following his decision to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill.
This sustained fan support underlines Rohit’s enduring popularity and the strong bond he shares with supporters across formats and teams. Notably, the selectors appointed Gill as ODI captain as part of their plans for the ODI World Cup 2027, which is two years away.
Rohit Sharma Heartbroken as India Lose 2nd ODI vs New Zealand
After India’s defeat, Rohit appeared deeply disappointed while standing near the team dugout. Frustration was evident on the former Indian skipper’s face as the Men in Blue suffered a tough seven-wicket loss against New Zealand in the second ODI at Rajkot.
The visitors chased down the target of 285 with 15 balls to spare. Earlier, India had posted a competitive total of 284/7. Rohit Sharma made 24 off 38 balls before being dismissed by Kristian Clarke.
After losing the match, Rohit Sharma looked visibly upset as he watched the ODI team he had built lose so easily. The same team whose playing style he transformed was now falling apart right in front of his eyes.🥺

KL Rahul smashed an unbeaten 112 off just 92 deliveries to help India recover from a precarious position. Captain Shubman Gill also contributed a half-century, scoring 56 off 53 balls, but the total ultimately proved insufficient against the Kiwi lineup.
Former India Skipper Achieves Major ODI Milestone In Asia
The 38-year-old reached a significant personal landmark during the second ODI. The former India captain became the seventh player in history to complete 7,000 ODI runs in Asia, a milestone previously achieved only by three players each from India and Sri Lanka.
Rohit has played 165 ODIs in the Asian sub-continent, scoring 7,016 runs from 162 innings at an average of 49.06 and a strike rate of 99.80. His tally includes 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries, with a highest score of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in November 2014.
He is set to return in the decisive third ODI of the series. With the contest currently level at 1-1, the final match will decide the series winner and will be played on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
