Indian captain Rohit Sharma has made a massive announcement assuring the Indian fans of his participation in the ICC World Cup 2027. He claimed that the 50-over World Cup was the pinnacle of cricket, which he has been aspiring to win throughout his career after having grown up with this childhood dream.
Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the two remaining formats of international cricket and then made their way back into the 50-over format. Virat Kohli's form has been defining, and he is likely to be a rightful contender for the team India spot in the next Cricket World Cup in 2027.
The World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, a nation where the steep bounce and unpredictability of the track will play a major role, and the Indian veterans would be needed to do the majority of the scoring. Also, their vast experience would be needed to counter the South African conditions.
Rohit Sharma assures a Team India spot for himself in 2027
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the Test format and then returned to play the ODI series for India in the overseas tour to Australia. This was their first-ever bilateral in the 50-over format after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign for India.
Rohit dominated the series against Australia with a commendable century and half-century and then returned to India to feature against South Africa in a three-match One-Day series, where he scored several half-centuries as well. However, Rohit lacked form during his outing against New Zealand.
Rohit's place in the 2027 World Cup is yet to get a green signal from the coaches and the BCCI Chief selector, as they have clearly mentioned that even the veteran batter will have to prove himself to get into the side. Rohit has several other series lined up in 2026, which include the England series in June.
Amid all this, Rohit has assured the Indian fans that he will play the 2027 World Cup, despite him being a 40-year-old. He restored his lost fitness and will be key to India's campaign in the World Cup.
"I really want that trophy," Rohit Sharma said about the 2027 CWC
Rohit Sharma claimed that he grew to be a cricketer who has been aspiring to win the World Cup with the Indian team. He claimed that since there were no other tournaments like the T20 World Cup, the IPL or the WTC during those days, the ODI World Cup used to be the pinnacle of the game.
"I will definitely want to go out there & win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I've always looked upon, I've grown up watching this 50-over WC," Rohit mentioned.
"There was no T20 WC, no IPL, no WTC back then and that was the pinnacle of Cricket which used to happen every four years so there was desperation; there was so much weight for that one trophy—I really want that trophy so I'm going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it," he added.
