'Rohit Sharma made a mistake by trusting Gautam Gambhir': Fans angry as BCCI appoints Shubman Gill ODI captain

World No. 1 ODI batter and Test captain Shubman Gill is set to take over as India’s new captain in one-day internationals ahead of the upcoming Australia tour. The decision to remove Rohit Sharma as captain was made during a selection meeting led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday in Ahmedabad.
Rohit last led India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where they secured a victory in the final against New Zealand. The right-handed batter will return to competitive cricket in the ODI series alongside former captain Virat Kohli. He last played competitive cricket during the IPL 2025 season.
India Set To Travel Australia For White-Ball Series
India are scheduled to play three ODIs from October 19 to 25 and five T20Is from October 29 to November 8 during their Australia tour. Rohit Sharma was expected to lead the side but selectors opted to look beyond the 38-year-old after consulting Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Rohit and Virat Kohli had retired from Test cricket ahead of the England tour. They had already stepped away from T20Is following India’s T20 World Cup win last year. The batting duo is active only in the 50-over format in international cricket.
There was initial uncertainty over their participation in Australia, but the veterans have been focusing on fitness. Rohit has been training in Mumbai under Abhishek Nayar and Kohli is preparing in London for the series.
Rohit Sharma One Of Most Successful Captain For Team India in ODI Cricket
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy tenure is one of the golden period in Indian white-ball cricket. He led the team to two ICC trophies — the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. He also guided India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, but the campaign ended in heartbreak with defeat to Australia.
Sharma took over captaincy from Virat Kohli in late 2021, after the BCCI decided to appoint one leader across both white-ball formats. He guided the team to 42 wins out of 56 ODIs with just 12 defeats.
Rohit didn’t lead more matches like MS Dhoni or Kohli. But he ended India’s ICC title drought, cementing his legacy as one of the finest white-ball leaders.

Fan wars aside, he gave everything to Team India during his captaincy, yet the BCCI is treating him like a dog. Rohit Sharma deserves better. 💔 pic.twitter.com/id7VEhpEw4

End all your contracts with BCCI and start play Franchise Cricket around World. None of your fans care about BCCI or IPL anymore. pic.twitter.com/sdOcOEkUPl
Rohit married Dravid's brain, insisted on six bowling options and eight batters and transformed India's batting approach, leading by example all while approaching the fag end of thirties. Incredible service. Thank you. But it was time. He won't make the next World Cup.

Sorry Rohit Sharma, the only mistake you have made in your life is to trust that snake gambhir and backing flat track prince. pic.twitter.com/0M6JP6vBPO
