Former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to be part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season.

Earlier reports suggested that Rohit will leave the Mumbai Indians franchise and enter this year's mega auction ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

The 37-year-old is one of the most successful captains in IPL history. Sharma had led the team to five IPL titles, the joint most along with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni.

However, he was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the captain of the Mumbai Indians before the 2024 season.

The Mumbai Indians had a disappointing season in IPL 2024. Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table after winning only four of their 14 matches.

Rohit was the top run-scorer for Mumbai. The right-handed batter scored 417 runs in 14 innings at an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150.00.

Rohit led the Mumbai Indians to five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. MS Dhoni is the only other captain to have matched this achievement.

Dhoni led the Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title in the 2023 season. Notably, Dhoni also stepped down as captain before the IPL 2024.

Rohit Sharma Likely To Be Retained By Mumbai Indians - Report

Sports journalist Rohit Juglan from RevSportzGlobal stated that Rohit Sharma is expected to stay with the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming IPL 2025 season.

Juglan mentioned that the five-time champions would likely retain the Indian skipper for the next edition of the Indian Premier League.

Rohit Juglan stated that the upcoming IPL auction rules will allow teams to retain four players with two Right to Match (RTM) cards. He added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to continue with the controversial 'Impact Player' rule.

"Rohit Sharma likely to be retained by Mumbai Indians. IPL new mega auction rules likely to be announced before 3rd of Sept - Retention Number 4 + 2 RTM. Impact player rule here to stay @RevSportzGlobal," wrote the caption.

BCCI To Continue With Impact Player Rule In IPL 2025 Season

It is worth mentioning that the Right to Match (RTM) rule was absent in the previous mega auction in 2022.

The BCCI took this decision due to the addition of two new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. However, the RTM rule is expected to return for the upcoming IPL mega auction.

The Impact Player rule has received mixed reactions. Critics argue it diminishes the role of specialist all-rounders, with Indian captain Rohit Sharma among those expressing concerns.

On the other hand, some believe the rule adds a touch of excitement and intrigue, especially in close matches.
