Rohit Sharma's dream of playing in the ICC World Cup 2026 is very much alive, but a place in India's squad is far from certain at the moment. Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he wants to finish his career with the ODI World Cup trophy, but this road is filled with challenges and uncertainties.

As discussions around India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup continue behind the scenes, fresh reports suggest that the team management and selectors are not yet looking at Rohit as a guaranteed part of their long-term plans for the tournament.

Rohit Sharma's ICC World Cup 2027 dream faces a tough challenge

Rohit Sharma has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, playing only ODIs for India. Yet, the former Indian captain remains highly motivated and is determined to continue his career with the goal of featuring in the ICC World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

However, the BCCI and the Indian selection committee are reportedly taking a cautious approach. While preparations and planning for the ODI World Cup have already started, there is no assurance for any senior player, including Rohit and Virat Kohli.

They are prioritizing performance, fitness levels, and consistency rather than reputation or past achievements. However, the 39-year-old recently reminded everyone of his class with a fluent 79-run innings against Afghanistan in Chennai. The knock helped silence some criticism.

England tour could be crucial for Rohit's World Cup dream

Rohit's next major assignment is the upcoming three-match ODI series in England, where every innings could play a key role in convincing the selectors and team management that the fire is still in the seasoned opener.

By the time the 2027 World Cup begins, Rohit will be around 40 years old. That age factor has sparked discussions about whether he can maintain the fitness and form needed to compete at the highest level for another year.

Rohit Sharma not in Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar's World Cup plans?

Now, a fresh report suggested that Rohit Sharma’s World Cup dream will depend heavily on his performances and fitness over the next year and a half.

Senior journalist Abhishek Tripathi shared that the Indian selection committee and team management are closely monitoring Rohit’s performance before making any long-term decisions. But Rohit Sharma is still dominating the ICC ODI Rankings.

He revealed that Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his team, as well as the head coach Gautam Gambhir and team management, are not currently considering Rohit Sharma for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Sanjay Manjrekar questions Rohit Sharma's place in India's 2027 ODI World Cup plans

Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar believes the Indian selectors need to be clear about Rohit's future. He feels that if Rohit is being picked, it should be because he is genuinely part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former Indian batter also said selection decisions should not be influenced by a player's reputation, seniority, or status in the team.

Manjrekar was quoted as saying by the Times of India: “If the selectors have picked Rohit, I hope it’s because they genuinely see him as part of the 2027 World Cup plans. We all know the culture around big-name players. Decisions are rarely as simple as judging on cricketing merit alone.

That seems to be the case with Rohit too. If the selectors believe Rohit is part of the long-term plan, they should say so. But if he is being picked because they are not ready to drop him, then it reflects a problem Indian cricket has had for years. Selection should never be about what’s best for Virat, Rohit, or Bumrah. It should always be about what’s best for Indian cricket.”
