Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma missed the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed the reason behind Rohit's exclusion, adding that he was struck on the iliotibial (IT) band area during practice a day before the game.
The Super Giants secured a 12-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the 16th match of the IPL 2025 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, April 4. Rohit was hit during a training session after the convincing victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede.
Rohit Sharma Got a Hit on His Knee - Mahela Jayawardene
Mahela Jayawardene shared that Rohit Sharma struggled to put any weight on the injured leg. Jayawardene said that Rohit gave it another shot with a fitness test, but the discomfort persisted. Jayawardene described the injury during net practice as an unfortunate incident.
"Ro got a hit on his knee just in the IT (iliotibial) band; he tried to bat yesterday and couldn't put any weight on it," Jayawardene said at the press conference.
"Again, he came and did a fitness test early today (Friday) to try, and it was discomfort for him to put weight on that so he felt it wasn't 100% for him to play this game. That's why we thought we will give him a few more days to try and get through that. Unfortunate what happened in the nets."

Rohit Sharma got off to a poor start in the IPL 2025 season, scoring 21 runs at an average of seven. He registered scores of 13, 8, and 0 in his first three outings. The Indian captain has struggled to get going against the new ball.
Mumbai Indians have also faced a poor start to their campaign. Jasprit Bumrah missed the initial matches, and Hardik Pandya was unavailable for the season opener. After losing their first two games, MI bounced back with a home win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit Sharma Replaced by Raj Bawa in Mumbai Indians XI
Mumbai Indians included young all-rounder Raj Bawa, who had previously played just two IPL matches for Punjab Kings and gained recognition during the 2022 U-19 World Cup.
Bowling first, MI restricted Lucknow Super Giants to 203-8, with a brilliant five-wicket haul from Hardik Pandya. Mitchell Marsh set the tone for LSG with 60 runs off just 31 balls. Aiden Markram scored 53, while Ayush Badoni and David Miller’s late contributions helped the Super Giants cross 200 runs.
In reply, MI lost both openers quickly. Naman Dhir (46) and Suryakumar Yadav (67) led a strong comeback, but leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi changed the momentum in LSG's favour with 1/21 in his four overs. Tilak Varma (25 off 23) retired out after struggling. MI fell 12 runs short during the run chase.
