Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer has made a big statement about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Jaffer feels the former India captain should have continued as India’s ODI captain until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

Shubman Gill took over as India’s ODI captain in October 2025. However, Jaffer believes that the Indian think tank could have waited until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 before handing the captaincy to Gill. He feels Gill could have taken charge after the tournament. Earlier, Virat Kohli trolls Rohit Sharma’s famous ‘Woh’ habit in hilarious new Ro-Ko advertisement.

Wasim Jaffer says Rohit Sharma should have continued as India's ODI captain

Wasim Jaffer believes that India should have kept Rohit as the ODI captain because the senior batter was still available and performing well. The cricket pandit also felt Rohit should have continued as the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL.

Wasim Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel, "Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of Mumbai Indians.”

Shubman Gill has done well, but Rohit Sharma should have led India in 2027 World Cup: Jaffer

However, Wasim Jaffer admitted that the decision to make Gill captain was not the wrong move because the young batter has also been doing a good job, but he feels Rohit’s experience as the skipper could have been very useful for India in the ICC ODI World Cup.

And Rohit is still in excellent batting form. During India’s recent three-match ODI series against West Indies, he scored 32 in the first match before making a strong comeback. The former India captain smashed 101 in the second ODI and followed it with an impressive 92 in the third match.

Jaffer added, “I won't say the decision was completely wrong, as Shubman Gill has done well, but when you have someone like Rohit Sharma available, he should be the captain. You can always pass the baton to Shubman Gill after the 50-over World Cup.” Amid this, India ODI squad announcement for NZ tour delayed because of alternate squad plan.

Tilak Varma reveals how Rohit Sharma helped shape his leadership skills

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma has credited Rohit for helping him understand leadership and the game better after he was named India A captain for the upcoming New Zealand tour. The left-hander has played under Rohit at both the Mumbai Indians and the Indian cricket team.

Varma was quoted as saying by JioStar, "I have learned a lot of things from him. On the ground, the intensity is very high; there's already so much running through your mind on the field, so you can't take in as much. So, when I am off the field, I discuss a lot of things with him.

Tilak said he learns a lot by watching Rohit closely, especially when he is not part of the playing eleven. The youngster added, “And, like, when Rohit Bhai and Virat Bhai were playing, I didn't used to be in the playing eleven. So, sitting outside, I used to observe which bowler Rohit Bhai brings on and when and how he uses the bowlers. I used to observe all those things from him, and I've incorporated that into my own approach now while being on the field.”
