Australian legend Steve Waugh opened up about India captain Rohit Sharma's future ahead of the upcoming Test series against England in June. The World Cup-winning captain said that Rohit should look at himself in the mirror and ask whether he still commits to lead and represent the Indian team.
Rohit Sharma has experienced highs and lows over the past year. He led India to victory in two ICC tournaments — the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, India suffered a whitewash loss to New Zealand in the home Test series and went on to lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).
Rohit Sharma Is the Only One Who Can Solve That Problem - Steve Waugh
Steve Waugh said that Rohit Sharma should decide about his future, especially given his recent struggles with form. Waugh added that if Rohit wishes to continue leading, he must avoid complacency.
"It is totally up to him. He is the only one who can solve that problem. He has got to look himself in the mirror and say, Do I still want to be captain or play for India? Am I committed?" Waugh said.
"Am I putting enough time and effort into it? It is a privilege and an honour to play for your country. You can't be complacent or relax," he added.

Rohit Sharma Opted Out of Fifth Test in BGT 2024–25 Series
The 37-year-old batter scored only 31 runs in three Tests in Australia, which raised questions about his place in the team. Rohit Sharma opted to drop himself for the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final under his captaincy.
However, Rohit Sharma had a successful stint during India's 2021 tour of England, where he scored 368 runs at an impressive average of 52.57, including a century at The Oval.
He was the top scorer for India in the series. The series ended in a 2-2 draw after the fifth Test was rescheduled due to COVID-19.
Rohit registered two single-digit scores in the Mumbai Indians' first three matches in IPL 2025. However, he scored 76 runs off just 45 deliveries in Mumbai Indians' (MI) nine-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 20.
Test cricket is the very essence of cricket - Steve Waugh
Steve Waugh also spoke about the future of Test cricket, especially with the increasing dominance of T20 cricket. He stated that Test cricket remains the core of the sport. Waugh said that players still desire to prove themselves in Tests, describing it as the ultimate contest.
"There is stress on Test cricket, whether it will survive because we need it as a sport. T20 cricket is amazing, great for players and spectators, and great for sponsors, but I still think Test cricket is the very essence of cricket."
"The players, I believe, still want to play Tests to see how good they can actually be. It's the ultimate contest. Making sure that it survives and thrives and is healthy is really important," Waugh explained.
