Nandre Burger has provided a crucial breakthrough for South Africa, as one of India’s most dangerous batters, Rohit Sharma, fell cheaply to a sharp delivery in the ongoing second ODI at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

Rohit Sharma came into the second ODI riding on three back-to-back fifties, but the senior opener failed to maintain the momentum as South Africa is aiming to level the ongoing three-match ODI series against India in Raipur, having lost the first game by just 17 runs in Ranchi.

India’s strange luck with the toss just won’t end. After KL Rahul lost the toss in Raipur, the Indian cricket team has now lost the toss in 20 ODIs in a row. This streak was started right after the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad, where they lost the trophy to Australia.

Well, South Africa won the toss and yet again invited the Indian team to bat first in the series, and Nandre Burger finally got his reward after constantly troubling Rohit Sharma in his third over. He kept bowling in the perfect channel outside off stump, repeatedly teasing the outside edge.

The first two times, Rohit’s soft touches ran past the short third fielder for boundaries, but the third time, Burger’s plan worked. In the 5th over, Burger sent down a 138.5 km/h ball that moved just enough after pitching to trouble the former Indian captain. Rohit stayed in his crease and tried to defend, but the ball brushed the outside edge of his bat.

South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock reacted instantly, taking the catch and tossing the ball in the air with confidence. But Burger wasn’t fully sure, and the on-field umpire also didn’t give it out. However, De Kock was confident and convinced his captain, Temba Bavuma, to use the DRS.

Bavuma quickly went for the review, and the third umpire checked the UltraEdge, which showed a clear spike as the ball passed Rohit’s bat, giving South Africa a big wicket. Rohit walked out of the crease after scoring 14 runs off 8 balls, including three boundaries in the Raipur ODI.

This dismissal left Indian fans angry, with many calling for Rohit to retire from international cricket. The Hitman has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, and now he aims to play in the ICC World Cup 2027 before saying goodbye to the international arena. For which, he is working hard on his fitness.
