Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif backed Rohit Sharma to play in the upcoming T20 World 2024. He believes that more than his batting, India need him as a leader in the tournament.
The ICC title drought extended for the Indian Cricket Team as they suffered a disappointing loss against Australia in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. However, the hunt doesn’t stop there as they will be having another opportunity to have their hands at the ICC trophy as the T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner.
India have been giving opportunities to youngsters in the T20Is, trying to build a core for the T20 World Cup 2024. However, one of the big questions remains related to the availability of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and other senior players for the tournament.
Of late there has been lots of debate around this in Indian cricket but there has been no clarity. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t played a single T20I since the last T20 World Cup concluded, which has put question marks on their selection for the tournament.
Various reports suggested that Rohit Sharma will be captaining the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. However, there’s no clarity about Virat Kohli. The clear picture of this will soon be revealed but till then there will be a lot of speculations.
Mohammad Kaif said that Rohit Sharma should be there for the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Kaif highlighted his leadership qualities and added that the team will need his experience. Speaking to IANS, he explained:
“You need skipper Rohit more than a batter Rohit Sharma to lead the team in T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma has to be there because he has got the leadership quality.
“The way he led in the 50 overs World Cup, he has done a fantastic job as a leader…India will need his experience in T20s too. Rohit as a skipper as a batter did a fantastic job, which India will need in T20s as well.”
It will be hard for Shreyas lyer to fill the shoes of Pujara – Mohammad Kaif
Mohammad Kaif also talked about India’s upcoming Test series against South Africa. He highlighted that India will be missing the services of Cheteshwar Pujara and it’ll be tough for Shreyas Iyer to replace him. He stressed that in overseas conditions, experience is important. He added:
“It will be hard for Shreyas lyer to fill the shoes of Pujara. I don’t know why Pujara has not been selected. You can’t just get on the African tour without your prime batter, you just cannot rely on current or past forms, something you need the most is called experience, and India is going to miss it.”
India will be touring South Africa for a three-match T20I and ODI series followed by two-match Test series.
