The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to make changes to their squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Veteran Indian opening batter Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to be dropped from the Test team, and Jasprit Bumrah is likely to take over as captain for the series.
Rohit Sharma’s place in the Test team came under scrutiny after a poor run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series, which Team India lost 1-3. The Indian team management is expected to embrace a new direction from the first series in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle.

India Endure Five Losses in Last Six Tests Under Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy
Rohit performed well during India’s 2021 tour of England, where he scored 368 runs at an average of 52.57. However, his recent struggles with form and leadership have raised serious concerns.
Since September 2024, Rohit has managed just one half-century in 15 Test innings, and under his captaincy, India have suffered five defeats in their last six matches, including a whitewash at home against New Zealand.
Jasprit Bumrah—who has previously led in Rohit’s absence—is expected to take charge. Bumrah's future with leadership remains uncertain due to workload management. India also face a lack of a clear successor, as no other Test captain has been groomed for the future.
Rohit Sharma Playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025
The batter is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. However, his poor form has become a growing concern for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. The senior batter has scored just 56 runs across five innings at an average of 11.20, with his highest score being 18.
He’s also registered two single-digit scores this season. As MI prepares to take on SunRisers Hyderabad in Match 33 on April 17 in Mumbai, questions are mounting over how the franchise will manage their former captain if his struggles continue.
The Hardik Pandya-led team is currently seventh on the points table with four points from six games and they must perform together a few wins soon to stay in contention for the playoffs.
