Team India captain Rohit Sharma faced another injury scare ahead of the highly anticipated match against arch-rival Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma suffered a thumb injury while batting in the practice session in preparation for the match against Pakistan in the ICC tournament.

The Men in Blue started the World Cup campaign with a comfortable eight-wicket victory at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 5. The Indian team will be hoping to almost seal their berth in the Super 8 stage when they face Pakistan at the same venue on Sunday.

The Babar Azam-led team, on the other hand, suffered a shocking defeat to the United States of America (USA) in Dallas on Thursday. The Men in Green will be hoping to bounce back stronger to be in contention for the Super 8 race. Pakistan's chances will become slim if they lose in their upcoming match.

Rohit Sharma Faces Injury Scare Ahead Of India-Pakistan Match

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York has been criticized for its uneven bounce. Rohit Sharma faced an injury scare during the match against Ireland. The right-handed batter was hit on the shoulder by a ball and walked out of the field. However, he clarified that it was not a serious injury.

On Friday, the 37-year-old faced another injury scare. He was hit on the thumb by a ball thrown by Sri Lankan throwdown specialist Nuwan during the net session. The ball bounced awkwardly and hit the opening batter. The medical staff rushed to the ground to provide immediate attention to the India captain.

The opening batter resumed practicing in the nets with full intensity after being checked by the medical staff. However, Rohit only stayed for a few minutes before departing again. There has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Rohit's injury update.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to lead India in the match against Pakistan if Rohit Sharma misses due to injury. Young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to open the batting for the Indian team. The upcoming match will be important for determining the Super 8 equation from Group A of the T20 World Cup.

They Have Done Well - Piyush Chawla

Speaking to Star Sports, former Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla backed the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Chawla said that the veteran batting duo needs backing to continue as openers, as a single match can't decide.

"Look, these two players are very experienced and when they have opened for the team before, they have done well. You cannot say it is not working because of one match or one pitch. I want that since the team has selected a combination, they should stick to it and back it," Chawla said.
