Gautam Gambhir-led Indian team management is reportedly discussing a rotation policy for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul as part of its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

According to a report by The Times of India published on Tuesday, July 14, the management and selectors are attempting to convince the senior trio to periodically rest during bilateral ODI series to create opportunities for younger players while managing workloads. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has confirmed Virat Kohli's role in finalizing India's 2027 World Cup squad.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah to play ODI together after 968 days

India's upcoming opening ODI against England will also mark the return of one of the team's most experienced combinations. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are set to feature together in an ODI for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.

Bumrah has not played a 50-over international since that defeat in Ahmedabad. During his absence, India have played 26 ODIs, making this his first appearance in the format after a gap of 968 days.

The return of the senior trio gives India a settled core heading into the start of their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma has traditionally enjoyed batting in England, scoring seven ODI centuries in the country while averaging 64.90. His record at Edgbaston is even better, where he averages 89.40. Virat Kohli returns after missing the previous series against Afghanistan but arrives with excellent form behind him. The former India captain has registered six fifty-plus scores in his last seven ODI innings and also enjoyed another productive IPL season.

Apart from strengthening India's batting, the England series also presents Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with several personal milestones.

Rohit is just 280 runs away from completing 12,000 ODI runs and needs one century to become the first Indian opener to score an ODI hundred at the age of 39. Another hundred will also see him become the Indian opener with the most ODI centuries. He also needs just one six to become the Indian batter with the most international sixes against England.

Virat Kohli is equally close to several major landmarks. The former India captain requires 203 runs to become the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs. He is also only nine runs away from becoming India's highest run-scorer across all international formats in England and needs 150 more runs to become India's leading ODI run-scorer against England.

India plan rotation policy for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli before 2027 World Cup: Report

India's team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, is reportedly working on a rotation policy for senior players - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul - as preparations begin for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

According to The Times of India, discussions have been taking place between the team management, selectors and the senior players about periodically resting experienced cricketers during bilateral ODI series. The objective is to provide more opportunities to younger players while ensuring India has adequate backup options before the World Cup.

The report states that the management had even considered resting Rohit Sharma for the third ODI against Afghanistan last month to accommodate Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. Instead, captain Shubman Gill moved to No. 3, allowing Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal to open together. Despite scoring two centuries in his last three ODI innings, Jaiswal was not included in the squad for the England series.

The report adds that the management would like Rohit to make a stronger impact earlier in ODI series against England rather than finishing with big scores in the final game.

The rotation plans are not limited to Rohit Sharma alone. With Virat Kohli returning to the ODI side and KL Rahul remaining India's first-choice wicketkeeper, the management is also looking at developing suitable backup options for the duo.

A source told The Times of India: "The team management doesn't want a situation where a senior player breaks down and there is no one ready with enough game time. The issue is that Rohit, Kohli and Rahul don't play much of international white-ball cricket besides ODIs. Rohit may get a full run in England. If his form suffers here, he may not get that run in the following series."

The report also says that convincing senior players to sit out selected ODI matches could be one of the management's biggest challenges, considering they no longer feature regularly in other white-ball formats.

Does India need a rotation policy for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli?

India's reported rotation plans are understandable from a squad-building perspective, but there is also a strong case for retaining experienced players together as much as possible before the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The World Cup will be played in South Africa where conditions are expected to offer extra pace and bounce. Those are conditions in which experienced batters generally carry even greater value. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have repeatedly shown throughout their careers that they can handle high-quality pace attacks and short-pitched bowling in challenging overseas conditions.

Recent results also suggest that India's younger batting group is still developing its ability to handle pressure consistently. The T20I series defeats against Ireland and England highlighted that the next generation remains talented but is yet to establish the consistency required at the highest level.

That does not mean India should ignore succession planning. Players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and other emerging batters need opportunities before the World Cup. However, those opportunities should come without placing unnecessary scrutiny on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli every time they play.
