There has been speculation regarding Virat Kohli's and Rohit Sharma's retirement ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand. However, vice-captain Shubman Gill has dismissed the rumors, stating that there have been no retirement talks about the senior players in the dressing room.
Dainik Jagran reported that Rohit Sharma may retire from ODIs if India fails to win the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, March 9. The 37-year-old batter has been under scrutiny following his disappointing outings as a batter in recent times.
Rohit Sharma Would Be Thinking About the Final - Shubman Gill
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Shubman Gill stated that there have been no discussions regarding Rohit Sharma's retirement within the dressing room. Gill said that Rohit is thinking about the Champions Trophy final and, like the rest of the team, is not thinking beyond the match.
"No discussion in the dressing room or with me--even Rohit bhai would be thinking about the Champions Trophy final, like all of us. So, nothing like that now," Gill said.
"I think once the match ends tomorrow, he will make a decision. There is no talk about it within the setup," he added.
Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after securing the title during the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados. However, the opener has continued playing in ODIs and Tests. He has expressed a desire to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup, especially after the disappointment of the 2023 edition on home soil.
After the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma is set to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season for Mumbai Indians (MI). Team India will travel to England for a five-match Test series, which is set to commence in June. They will then face Bangladesh in a white-ball series in August.
This Is the Best Batting Lineup I Am Part Of - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill also spoke about India’s strong batting lineup ahead of the Champions Trophy final in Dubai, calling it the best he has been part of. Gill highlighted that the depth in the batting lineup allows the top order to play with more freedom.
“This is the best batting line up I am part of. Rohit is one of the best openers (in the world) and Virat, we need not tell about him. But our team has depth in batting and that allows the top order to bat with bit more freedom,” he said.
There Is No Added Pressure on Us - Shubman Gill
The Punjab batter acknowledged the pressure of the final but added that the team is determined to win. He also added that the experience of playing four matches in Dubai will help the Indian team in the final.
“We are all excited for the final. Last time we could not win the 50 over World Cup but we are determined to win this time. There will be big match pressure. But whichever team deals with pressure will win the final. We just need to take it like any other match, and good teams will do that. We have played four matches here and done well, so there is no added pressure on us,” he added.
