The future of the two stalwarts of the Indian National Cricket Team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in Tests looks very bleak. As per the reports in Hindustan Times, it is learned that BCCI's selection committee on Saturday (11th January) discussed the future of both players.

The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar met in Mumbai to announce the Indian squad for the T20I series against England. However, the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was also a talking point with head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Indian captain himself, Agarkar, BCCI secretary-elect Devajit Saikia and newly-elected ICC Chairman Jay Shah being there.

The future of Rohit Sharma will solely depend on the selection committee

It is learned that the future of Rohit Sharma will solely depend on the selection committee now, as BCCI officials left it up to the selectors. But things aren't good for the India captain as Ajit Agarkar and his team are concerned about the numbers of the opening batter in Test cricket.

Rohit Sharma, in the last Test 8 Tests, has scored just 164 runs. In the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he mustered just 31 runs at an average of around 6. This also saw him getting criticized a lot and also there were calls related to his retirement as well.

The selectors are known to be worried about Rohit’s falling graph in Test cricket - Source

The source close to the developments said that things will not go the way Rohit Sharma wants. While stressing that the selection committee is worried, he said that he is confident that the India National Cricket Team skipper will decide at the appropriate time. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said:

"That is not to say that Rohit’s “I am not going anywhere” statement is how things will ultimately transpire. The selectors are known to be worried about Rohit’s falling graph in Test cricket, but the understanding is that the captain will take a considered decision at the appropriate time."

Virat Kohli's fate to be decided by Shubman Gill

Related to the future of Virat Kohli, it is learned that selectors are worried about his form, too, but everything will be dependent on young batter Shubman Gill. The senior batter's future will depend on how the latter will be performing.

The source claimed that Shubman Gill hasn't settled into the role as Virat Kohli did before Sachin Tendulkar retired. He said that the selection committee will be taking the call soon on this matter as well. He said:

"With the five-Test series against England still five months away, the selectors are likely to sit over the matter before forming an opinion. Shubman Gill hasn’t settled into the Kohli role as he was expected to; nowhere close to how ready Kohli was when Sachin Tendulkar hung up his boots. This is something that will be factored in by Agarkar’s selection committee."

Both Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill underperformed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. While the senior batter scored just around 190 runs, Gill scored just 93 runs in five innings at 18.60 with no fifty.
