They both took to Instagram to confirm the decision to move away from Test cricket. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on May 7, 2025, and a few days later, on May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli made his decision public.

India skipper Rohit Sharma scored 4301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57 and played some memorable knocks throughout his career.

He hit his peak in Test cricket at the start of the ICC World Test Championship and finished as the top run-getter for India in the tournament. As a captain, Rohit led Team India in 24 matches and won 12 games. His leadership tenure was marked by early success and later challenges, which eventually led to his retirement.

Talking about Kohli, he had a legendary Test career that lasted 14 years. Under his captaincy, Kohli made India a dominant force in world cricket, and even in overseas conditions, they delivered amazing performances.

He led India in 68 matches, winning 40 games, and took the team to the No.1 position in Test Rankings. He ranks fourth for the most Test wins as captain, after Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh. Overall, he played 123 Test matches and scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85.

It is actually shocking - Ravi Bishnoi on Rohit, Kohli not getting farewell Test

Over the years, only a few Indian players have been lucky enough to get an opportunity to play a farewell Test, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were not among them, as the duo retired in the middle of IPL 2025.

Talking about this, India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi said that he wanted to see the legendary duo retire from the field because of their immense contributions to the team.

“It is actually shocking, because you always want to see them retire from the field. For such big legends, you want them to leave while still being on the field, that looks much better. And what both of them have done for India, in my view, there is no one even close,” Bishnoi said on the Game Changers podcast.

You want them to get a good farewell - Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi further said that he is hopeful of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli receiving a farewell game when they end their international careers with ODI retirement.

“You want them to get a good farewell, but maybe they will get that in ODIs as well whenever they leave, whenever they want to. Because no one can tell you when you will retire. But it was shocking when both of them retired, because suddenly you feel like two spots have become empty, who will come and fulfill that?” he added.

Notably, a few weeks back, some reports claimed that the upcoming Australia tour would mark the end of Kohli and Rohit's ODI careers as the team management is looking to make way for youngsters in the side.
