Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has thrown his weight behind stylish opener Rohit Sharma, stating that the ‘Hitman’ has the ability to score daddy hundreds during the upcoming tour of England if he gets himself in.

Rohit Sharma has resurrected his Test series ever since he started opening the innings for Team India in 2019.

In 11 matches that Sharma played during the WTC cycle, he smashed 1030 runs at an average of 64.37 with four hundred and a couple of half-centuries.

However, with a majority of those runs coming in home conditions, Rohit Sharma still has a lot to prove as far as his batting in seamer-friendly overseas conditions is concerned.

And, the upcoming England tour will be a huge opportunity for Rohit Sharma to prove his critics wrong and establish his credentials as an all-conditions batter.

Ramiz Raja, in a recent conversation with India TV, responded in the negative when asked if India’s ploy of having two aggressive openers for English conditions could backfire.

“It is not risky. If you have an opening pair like that, you need to back them. Rohit Sharma will give you a double hundred if he fires,” said Ramiz Raja.

While acknowledging that the batters need to be circumspect in swinging English conditions during the initial phase of their innings, Ramiz Raja advised Rohit Sharma and other Indian batsmen to not go in their shell and back their aggressive instincts.

“You don’t have to think much, you just have to go there and play your game. It is very important to be aggressive. The Indian batsmen base their attack on that because their thinking is aggressive,” added Raja.

“If it is a half-volley, you need to drive that whether you are playing in England or India. Yes, you have to play with soft hands for the first half an hour but after that once you have settled, the basic principles of batting have not changed in the last 100 years,” signed off Ramiz Raja.
