Former India pacer and Rohit Sharma's friend, Praveen Kumar, has submitted his application for a role as a national selector representing the Central Zone. The BCCI opened applications on August 22 for two positions in the senior men’s selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, with the deadline on September 10.

Kumar is currently serving as Uttar Pradesh’s senior men’s chief selector. Former India pacer Subroto Banerjee is representing the Central Zone in the selection committee. Applicants must have retired from all forms of cricket for at least five years and meet the min playing criteria in Tests, first-class, or List-A matches.

Praveen Kumar Applies for Central Zone National Selector Position

According to a report by IANS, Praveen Kumar has applied for the national selector role representing the Central Zone. Ex-India pacer RP Singh is also reportedly considering applying before the September 10 deadline.

“Yes, it is confirmed that Praveen Kumar has applied for being the next national selector from the Central Zone. Now it will be fascinating to see who all put their hand up, with the deadline now just five days away. With the deadline coming close now, you never know if he (RP Singh) may give it a go,” said the sources.

Praveen Kumar, One of India’s Unluckiest Cricketers

Praveen Kumar, who claimed 112 wickets in 84 international matches across all formats, is regarded as one of India’s unluckiest cricketers. He took 10 wickets during the 2008 Commonwealth Bank Series, playing a key role in India’s tournament victory.

The right-arm pacer was named in India’s 2011 World Cup squad but had to withdraw due to an elbow injury, with S Sreesanth replacing him just days before the tournament started.

Kumar made his Test debut in 2011, taking 27 wickets in six matches at an average of 25. Injuries, including a rib fracture before India’s tour of Australia, curtailed his career, limiting him to only a handful of ODIs and T20Is before his last international appearance in March 2012.

RP Singh Yet to Apply, Pragyan Ojha Joins South Zone Race

The senior men’s selection committee currently consists of Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, and Ajay Ratra. RP Singh has not applied yet. He represented India in 82 matches across all formats from 2005 to 2011 and was part of the MS Dhoni-led squad that won the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Singh also served on the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) between 2020 and 2022 before joining the Mumbai Indians as a talent scout. Additionally, he has regularly appeared on Hindi cricket commentary panels for India’s matches and the IPL.

Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has applied for a national selector role from the South Zone. Ojha played 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and six T20Is for India between 2008 and 2013, taking 144 international wickets.

S Sharath has been representing the South Zone since January 2023, after serving as the junior selection committee chairman from September 2021.

The BCCI has also opened applications for four vacancies in the women’s national selection committee and one in the junior men’s selection committee, with a deadline of September 10.
