A Times of India journalist posted, X: “Rohit Sharma is carrying a niggle since the Champions Trophy: Mahela Jayawardene on why the India captain is playing as Impact Player.”

Rohit Sharma likely to continue as Impact Player in IPL 2025

Well, the extent of Rohit Sharma’s injury has not been revealed yet, but it looks like he will continue playing as an impact player for the rest of the season. It has been a mixed season for the Mumbai Indians star so far. In 10 matches, the right-handed batter has scored 293 runs at a strike rate of 155.03 and an average of over 32 with the help of three fifties despite his injury.

The 38-year-old opener has been providing solid starts at the top of the order, allowing the middle order to build on those starts as the Mumbai Indians made a remarkable comeback in the tournament following early setbacks under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.

The five-time IPL champions are currently sitting on the third spot in the IPL 2025 points table with 14 points from 11 matches so far in the tournament, where they have lost only four matches to date. They are a couple of wins away from securing a place in the playoffs.

Rohit Sharma's Test captaincy future uncertain, Shubman Gill set to be named Vice-captain

Meanwhile, Rohit is unlikely to be retained as India’s Test captain for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. It is being said that Shubman Gill is the favorite to be named as India’s new Test captain this week. Jasprit Bumrah is also unlikely to be continued as the vice-captain in the format.

Jasprit Bumrah has served as India's vice-captain in Test cricket for the past three years and has even captained the team in a few matches. But the star speedster is rarely available to play an entire series because of his ongoing fitness concerns, which dampened his captaincy chances.

The Indian think tank believes that the Test team needs a reliable and fully fit player who can step in as captain when needed. Bumrah’s injury concerns make it hard for him to take on that role consistently. On the other hand, Shubman Gill, who is already the vice-captain in white-ball formats, might soon become part of the Test leadership group as well.
